Mr. Vane is led by the librarian through an old mirror and into a "region of the seven dimensions" where he explores various hallucinatory manifestations of good and evil. Journeying through this strange land, Mr. Vane is caught up in a cosmic conflict and must reconcile his perceptions of reality with his new understandings. In chronicling the five trips Mr. Vane makes to this other world, MacDonald, in his strikingly visual prose, hauntingly explores the ultimate mystery of evil.
